ARCHITECT’S LETTER

Days of Being is a conversation - a conversation between the past and present. When I first came across this old house, I fell in love with its honesty - its honesty in natural materials and handcrafted forms. I sought to create a space that feels equally honest and intuitive, drawing from my background as a designer and architect from Hong Kong, did my growing up in New York and now based in Los Angeles. The design draws from a tapestry of inspirations that reminds of home — The raw poetry of Wong Kar-Wai’s Days of Being Wild set in Hong Kong, the reverence and impermanence of the Ryoan-ji temple garden in Kyoto, and hazy memories of intimate conversations in the basement speakeasy bar on a rainy night in the Lower East Side in New York.

GARDEN

Front garden features native plants including white sage, California buckwheat, pine muhly, Indian mallow, and narrow-leaf milkweed, as well as drought-tolerant plants such as grevilleas, aloes, and other succulents and grasses. Pink jasmine and Chinese fringe-flower provide splashes of seasonal color. An evergreen pineapple guava hedge frames the space while the single specimen Gingko tree turns from bare branches in winter to summer green to autumn gold and back again.

DINING NOOK

Intimate dining area features travertine table and custom uphostered cushion bench seating with cork wall coverings and skylight - Ideal for morning coffee and last night drinks. Enjoy soft listening with Sonos bluetooth Era 100 speaker.
